According to the state capture commission report, Gupta-owned enterprises netted over 57-billion-rand in public funds. The sophisticated network they created used shelf companies and global financial institutions to move the money. In its recommendations, the commission has urged local authorities and institutions such as British bank HSBC, to assist in tracing some of the money that left the country through the Gupta linked companies.
