The Marikana tripartite Alliance rally in the North West Province yesterday is viewed as a bid by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) to reclaim its position as a majority union in the platinum sector. Cosatu says the rally was to address concerns about the on-going killings in the area. NUM is a COSATU affiliate which lost to AMCU when its members resigned in droves in 2012, and the two unions have since become rivals for membership in the sector. AMCU rose to prominence during the labour unrest which led to the Marikana massacre, becoming the majority union in the platinum sector. Napoleon Webster, a community activist from Marikana, and David Van Wyk who is a researcher from Benchmarks Foundation are here to discuss the rally.
