The ninth day of August 2012 became a turning point in South Africa’s mining sector. This is the day thousands of Lonmin mineworkers went against their union, and embarked on an unprotected strike, demanding R12 500 rand. The strike would later turn violent, with 44 lives lost. It also attracted attention of the international community.
