May 2026
Friendly and comradely greetings,
We are pleased to share the latest edition of the Bench Marks Foundation Bulletin (Issue 40 / May 2026), titled “Freedom, Fragility & Accountability.” This edition reflects on workers’ struggles, migration and xenophobia, mining justice, and the urgent need for accountability in communities affected by extraction and inequality.
Inside this issue, you will find reflections on the Jagersfontein tailings disaster and ongoing demands for justice, a tribute to Prof. Freek Cronjé and his contribution to corporate accountability, community perspectives on migration and labour, and insights into the lived realities of mining-affected communities in the era of freedom and workers’ rights.
